The Magic of Growing Desert Roses from Seed
One of the things I love most about Desert Roses is that every seed holds the possibility of a beautiful surprise!
Why won’t my flowers necessarily look like the photographs?
I like to explain it this way.
Imagine two people had 100 children. Would every child look exactly like their mother? Would they all look exactly like their father?
Of course not!
Some might resemble Mum, others Dad, and some might even inherit characteristics from grandparents or earlier generations.
Well, Desert Roses are much the same!
Every seed carries its own combination of genetic characteristics from its parent plants.
And then there are the bees!
When bees and other pollinators visit Desert Rose flowers, they can carry pollen from one flower to another.
This means that the seeds produced may inherit characteristics from different parent plants.
The resulting flowers might have different colours, patterns, shapes or numbers of petals.
Even seeds collected from a beautiful multi-petal Desert Rose aren’t guaranteed to produce multi-petal flowers.
One Seed Pod, Many Possibilities!
Here’s another fascinating thing about Desert Roses.
Even seeds collected from the very same seed pod can grow into plants with different flowers.
Think of them as brothers and sisters. They share the same family background, but each has its own genetic combination.
Some seedlings may produce flowers resembling their parents, while others might display colours, patterns or petal arrangements inherited from earlier generations.
And here’s something particularly important: even seeds from a spectacular multi-petal Desert Rose may produce single-petal flowers.
If you want an exact copy of a particular Desert Rose flower, growers generally use grafting rather than seeds.
But if you love surprises, growing from seed is where the adventure begins!
You’re not simply growing a copy of a flower. You’re growing a completely new individual, with its own potential to surprise you.
That’s the beauty of growing from seed!
You might grow something resembling the parent flower, or you might discover a completely unexpected beauty.
For me, that’s part of the excitement of growing Desert Roses. Every seed is a little adventure, and every first bloom is something to look forward to.
A little note about our photographs
